Stucco Plastering
‘Stucco’ is the name given to an excellent decorative plaster used on both interior and exterior walls. The stucco-plastered surface has an attractive appearance which very much resembles with marble finish ‘Stucco’ is generally laid in ‘three coats’ in total thickness of about 25 mm. The first coat, known as a ‘scratch’ or ‘rough coat’, functions to bond with the wall and provides strength. The second coat known as finer or brown coat, provides desired shape to the surface and third coat, called final or finishing coat affords the required texture, smoothness and decorative appearance to the plastered surface.
The method of applying ‘Stucco’ on interior and exterior walls is given below:
A. ‘Stucco’ Plastering for Interior Walls.
This is carried out as below:
(i) After preparing the surface in the usual manner, the first coat (scratch or rough coat) of lime plaster is applied in thickness of 12 mm.
(ii) The second coat (finer or brown coat) of lime plaster with richer lime is applied in thickness of 9 mm after fully drying of first coat.
(iii) The third coat (finishing coat), consisting of a mixture of finest lime and well-powdered white stone (i.e., marble or quartz), is applied in thickness of 3 mm after drying of second coat.
(iv) Finally, the finishing coat is well polished first with a bag of linen containing moist chalk and then with oil and chalk. The surface is finally rubbed with oil only and finished perfectly smooth.
B. ‘Stucco’ Plastering for Exterior Walls.
This is carried as below:
(i) After preparing the surface in the usual manner, the first coat of composite mortar [i.e., (1 cement : 3 sand) mixture with 10% by weight of hydrated lime is applied in thickness of 12 mm.
(ii) The second coat of the same composition as the first coat is applied in thickness of 9 mm after fully drying of first coat.
(iii) The third or finishing coat, made up of cement plaster (1 cement : 2 or 2½ sand), is applied in thickness of 3 mm after drying of second coat. Coloured cement may be used in this coat, if a coloured finish is desired.
